Wiki LinkAccording to “Facing the Giant: Three Decades of Dissent” co-curator, Pedro Alonzo:
A little girl cradles a grenade with a rose unaware of the military planes that fly overhead. Her posture is deliberately innocent, appearing to have her eyes closed, with her lips nearly kissing the weaponry in her hands, as if a doll. The sense of danger is pervasive, with her fingers positioned on the trigger. The image seems to ask the question, “How did war become so commonplace and banal that it seems fitting in a paint-by-numbers style image?”
Looking to the haunting 1964 political ad for then-presidential candidate Lyndon B. Johnson, which featured a young blonde-haired girl initiating a nuclear countdown by pulling petals from a daisy, Fairey is interested in continuing American culture of fear. With the escalation of US military action over the years, from the Vietnam War to the Iraq War, the artist searches for meaning by portraying this young girl as both a potential victim of conflict or a possible savior for the future, capable of breaking the cycle of violence with a peaceful act.

They get harder to pass on. This one is fantastic.....best one yet IMO. I like the change up in the background.

Very nice, still like the offset version the most.
Re: Anticipation: War By Numbers Large Format 7/30
One of my favorites. I like the art critique on it...also it was literally an actual paint by numbers.
Re: Anticipation: War By Numbers Large Format 7/30
Having a War By Numbers Offset in my collection... I am battling back and forth if I want this in addition...
Re: Anticipation: War By Numbers Large Format 7/30
I honestly do not see the point of owning these reprints. Sure they are nice but I have the originals.
Re: Anticipation: War By Numbers Large Format 7/30
you raise a good point ... there's also the whole $900 + cost of framingsubmethod wrote:I honestly do not see the point of owning these reprints. Sure they are nice but I have the originals.
Re: Anticipation: War By Numbers Large Format 7/30
If all the LFs were sold as a matching number set, I wonder how many would have sold at $27k. Certainly more than a handful IMO. Think of the money you would save on shipping.
Re: Anticipation: War By Numbers Large Format 7/30
I don't really like the reprinting thing. I especially wouldn't like it if I paid a decent sum for the original 18x24s.submethod wrote:I honestly do not see the point of owning these reprints. Sure they are nice but I have the originals.

Right, I mean it would have been more interesting to see new art as a snapshot of new things to come. Dont get me wrong I love most of these images but, at $900 bucks...Id rather get a Peace Turtle or something.

On the plus side, I feel like it's shaking a lot of flippers off, leaving the editions to those that actually want stuff for their walls.submethod wrote:Right, I mean it would have been more interesting to see new art as a snapshot of new things to come. I've only gone for Defend Dignity. I have a lot of my favorites already as 18x24s. Other upcoming releases -- like Andre Hendrix -- really do offer a chance to get an image that so few have, so I may go for more.

I like them. I'm planning on picking one up that I have an "original" of. Large Formats are always a step above in quality. That said I am only going to buy one from the edition based on size and wall space.
