The Winter Dance Party was a concert tour featuring Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson, Dion & The Belmonts and Frankie Sardo. This was scheduled to be three weeks full of one night stands, beginning in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on January 23, 1959 and winding up in Springfield, Illinois on February 15, 1959. However, just after 1 a.m. on February 3, the three-passenger Beechcraft Bonanza carrying Holley, Valens and Richardson went down about five miles northwest of Mason City Municipal Airport, near Clear Lake, Iowa, killing all aboard.

The cover of the program for Winter Dance Party served as the model for Shepard's 1997 print Kulture Deluxe.
